The Competitive Enterprise Institute endorses the Student Compensation and Opportunity through Rights and Endorsements (SCORE) Act sponsored by Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-Fla.), which would ensure that individual student athletes can earn income from their name, image, and likeness and hire sports agents without being classified as employees of their colleges or universities. The bill accomplishes this by granting the NCAA a limited antitrust exemption and by prohibiting schools from treating athletes as employees. A vote on the measure is expected in the House this week.
Statement by Sean Higgins, CEI research fellow, on H.R. 4312 – SCORE Act:
“The Student Compensation and Opportunity through Rights and Endorsements (SCORE) Act is common sense legislation that protects the rights of individual college athletes by securing their right to fair representation through an agent and granting them control over how their name and likeness is used. The legislation reflects the reality of collegiate sports as it exists and gives athletes the right to profit off their own excellence. The Competitive Enterprise Institute endorses the SCORE Act.”
CEI signed a letter to Congress this week endorsing the SCORE Act, as reported by Fox News.
