Dinner To Honor Memory Of Legendary Writer

Washington, DC, April 24, 2000 – Former Virginia Governor George Allen is scheduled to give the keynote address Thursday at the 6th annual Warren T. Brookes Memorial Dinner. The dinner, held by the Competitive Enterprise Institute, will be held at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC this year.

Governor Allen will speak about some of the most intriguing environmental being discussed today. While Allen was Governor, Virginia experienced rapid economic growth to become the home of many high-tech companies while seeing real environmental improvement.

In 1975, Warren T. Brookes began his career in journalism as a columnist with the Boston Herald. Ten years later he took a position on the editorial staff of the Detroit News, a position he held until his death. Brookes wrote extensively on environmental issues, and upon his death in 1991, CEI established the Warren T. Brookes Fellowship in his honor.

Through this fellowship, CEI identifies and trains a talented young journalist who wishes to improve his or her knowledge of environmental issues and free-market economics. The Warren Brookes Fellow is expected to keep alive the Brookes tradition of reporting on environmental issues from a sound scientific and economic perspective.

Other program participants include master-of-ceremonies Kate O’Beirne, Washington Editor of National Review, Fred L. Smith, Jr., founder and President of CEI, and Thomas Bray, Editorial Editor at the Detroit News.

Media are welcome at the reception and dinner but must RSVP in advance to Emily McGee, Director of Media Relations, at 202-331-1010 (ext. 209) or 703-728-0138 (mobile).

CEI, a non-profit, non-partisan public policy group founded in 1984, is dedicated to the principles of free enterprise and limited government.
