House Vote to End Cannabis Prohibition Complicated by Big Government Provisions
The House today passed legislation that would decriminalize marijuana at the federal level. CEI led a coalition supporting that provision of the bill. But CEI Senior Fellow Michelle Minton warns that the bill is loaded down with big government provisions, too, and points to a better plan on the table.
“Ending the federal cannabis prohibition is inevitable,” said Minton. “If Congress continues to obstruct truly bipartisan measures, like the STATES Act, which protects state-authorized cannabis businesses and users from federal interference, both sides may get stuck with something they dislike.”
This statement was corrected to more accurately describe the STATES Act treatment of cannabis status.
