Is Free Trade In Jeopardy?

Washington, D.C., April 9, 2002 — This Thursday scholars from the Competitive Enterprise Institute and American Enterprise Institute will examine the implications of recent World Trade Organization (WTO) decisions on trade and the environment.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office” />

The current policy of the WTO, that trade rules apply only to products and not production methods, has long been under attack by environmental, labor and other groups who argue that a nation should be able to restrict imports from nations who fail to observe “correct” environmental, labor or other rules.  This raises the possibility of importers having to meet standards for 150 or so different national regulatory regimes, a development that would not bode well for growth in international trade.
