Margaret Thatcher: A Defender of Liberty and an Inspiration
WASHINGTON, D.C., April 8, 2013 — Iain Murray, vice-president of strategy at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, native of the United Kingdom, graduate of Oxford and longtime expert on British politics and policy, had the following to say on the death of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher:
“She faced down socialists, communists and fascists alike in defense of liberty. She made mistakes, of course. What leader doesn’t? But she inspired me and countless others. The West was never stronger in its support for freedom, never more united in its outlook toward the world than when she and Ronald Reagan bestrode the national stage. And let us not forget how difficult – and unlikely – it was to break the greatest glass ceiling of all. Quite remarkable for a woman of such humble origin. For all she did, for all she gave the world and, especially, her homeland, thank you … and may she rest in peace.”
