Pat Michaels Joins CEI as Senior Fellow

The Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Patrick J. Michaels as a senior fellow.

Dr. Michaels is also a senior fellow with the CO2 Coalition and joins CEI after serving as Director of the Center for the Study of Science at the Cato Institute. At CEI, Dr. Michaels will join the Center for Energy and Environment and will focus on climate change and the intersection of science and public policy.

Prior to working at the Cato Institute, Dr. Michaels was a research professor of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia for 30 years and served as Virginia State Climatologist for 27 years. He served as President of the American Association of State Climatologists and program chair for the Committee on Applied Climatology of the American Meteorological Society.

Dr. Michaels has published numerous articles on climate or its impact in the peer-reviewed scientific literature and is author of eight books, including his most recent: “Lukewarming: The New Climate Science that Changes Everything” published by Cato Books.

“CEI welcomes Pat Michaels and is excited to add such an accomplished scientist and author to our team,” said CEI President Kent Lassman. “Pat’s deep experience researching, teaching, and writing about how science informs public policy will add a valuable new dimension to our energy and environment team. We look forward to his great work and are happy to have him on our team.”

Dr. Michaels holds AB and SM degrees in biology and plant ecology from the University of Chicago, and a PhD in Ecological Climatology from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He is the co-author and editor of the forthcoming book “Scientocracy: The Tangled Web of Public Science and Public Policy” with Terence Kealey, also published by Cato Books.
