Urgent Labor Reforms Depend on Senate Confirming Trump Labor Nominees
Update: The Senate voted on August 2, 2017 to confirm Marvin Kaplan to the National Labor Relations Board.
The Senate is expected to vote today on whether to confirm one of two nominees put forward by President Trump to fill vacancies at the powerful National Labor Relations Board. In a statement today, CEI labor policy expert Trey Kovacs urged fast Senate confirmation for both nominees.
The confirmation of Marvin Kaplan to the National Labor Relations Board will get the agency one step closer to being able to take up desperately needed reforms. In recent years, the NLRB has put out job-killing decisions and regulations that favor the interests of organized labor over individual workers and job creators. The NLRB should get to work overturning the joint employer decision, which places near-unlimited liability on American businesses, and un-do the NLRB’s ambush election rule, which dramatically limits the time-frame for employees to decide on union representation and threatens worker privacy. Next, the Senate should quickly schedule a vote to confirm William Emanuel so the Board will be at full strength. Democrats and Republicans should come together to confirm both NLRB nominees to ensure worker freedoms are protected and important reforms are made.
