The White House floats the idea of allowing new oil and gas drilling in exchange for support of a cap and trade system for greenhouse gases.

CEI Expert Available to Comment: Senior Fellow Marlo Lewis on why this is a bad deal

“If the ‘grand bargain’ is as described, Democrats from resource-producing states should spurn it. Oil production projects can take a decade or more to complete, so between now and 2012 little if any oil from previously prohibited areas such as the California coast could be produced. Moreover, a key objective of cap-and-tax is to discourage oil production by making oil, gasoline, diesel fuel, and heating oil more costly to consumers. By the time any new oil fields could be developed, the cap-and-tax program would erode their profitability. This is a swindle, not a bargain.”

Once thought a thing of the past, infestations of bed bugs spread around the world.

CEI Expert Available to Comment: Director of Risk & Environmental Policy Angela Logomasini on why we should reconsider out attitude towards pesticides:

“The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recently held a summit to discuss on what to do about the bed bug resurgence.  And they should.  This is a very good time to reconsider our approach to pesticide regulations.  Not only is DDT gone, but many other useful products have been regulated out of existence without weighing the risks of not having them.  And bed bugs are not the only pests that are re-surging and wreaking havoc.”

3. POLITICS

Former Congressman and CEI Distinguished Fellow Jack Kemp passes away.

CEI Expert Available to Comment: President Fred L. Smith, Jr. on Kemp’s legacy

“Jack’s voice was always optimistic and inclusive, one that reached out to all elements of America. At CEI, he defended free trade and an open world economy, and argued against burdensome regulation that could hinder entrepreneurship.”
