Paul Ryan at CEI Gala: Want to See How This Movie Ends? Look at Europe

From Francesca Chambers’ post in RedAlertPolitics:

It’s not to late to turn around our country and get the American Dream back, said Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) at the annual Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) gala Tuesday evening.

Ryan praised CEI for trying to stop government power grabs and “for fighting for free enterprise and freedom.”

He warned that America’s debt was coming to tipping point, however, and Americans could no longer look the other way.

“If you want to look at how this movie ends, look across the Atlantic and see what’s going on in Europe,” he said. “We know that sooner or later we’re not going to be able to control our entire debt situation.”

Ryan, who is also chairman of the House Budget Committee, said that the majority of Americans already get more money back from the government in cash or services than they pay in taxes, “so you can already argue we’re past that tipping point. That we’re at majority taker-versus-maker society.”

Still, Ryan encouraged attendees not to give up on America quite yet, reminding the libertarian audience that the majority of Americans still believe in the American Dream and American ideals such as capitalism. Therefore, he said we haven’t reached the tipping point yet “but if we keep staying on this path we’re on, we’ll get there.”

“I’m looking forward to seeing how Wisconsin took our state back, and how in November we’re take our country back, and how CEI – in a big way – is going to hold us accountable, and we’re going to get back the American Dream,” Ryan finished.
