Rail safety legislation finally moves through Congress 3 years after East Palestine derailment
Post Gazette cited CEI’s Research Fellow Sean Higgins and Vice President for Strategy and Senior Fellow Iain Murray when discussing rail safety legislation.
The Competitive Enterprise Institute, a nonprofit Libertarian thinktank, called the amendment an unnecessary financial burden and claimed it would do nothing to improve safety.
“Railroads should be on the cutting edge of automation since they don’t use public roads, waterways, or the sky,” Sean Higgins, a labor policy expert at the institute, said in a news release. “A two-person mandate won’t make rails any safer, but it will slow innovation at a time when our supply chain needs to be modernized.”
His colleague, senior fellow Iain Murray, said the changes would “hit every American in the pocketbook.”
“Household costs will rise with no rail safety benefit, all to enable labor union bosses to collect more dues from their members to donate to progressive causes,” he said.
The amended transportation funding bill goes to the full House next, then to the Senate for consideration.
