Domenici Makes Right Decision on Climate Title

<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags” />Washington, D.C., April 9, 2003—The Competitive Enterprise Institute congratulates Senator Pete Domenici (R-NM), Chairman of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, for his decision to remove the climate title from his comprehensive energy legislation. The first draft of his bill had included unfortunate climate policies based on global warming alarmism that would have hurt U.S. workers and consumers. Those policies have now been removed from the version of the bill that will be considered by the committee beginning this Thursday.

“Chairman Domenici and the majority members of the committee are to be congratulated for their wise decision to drop the climate title in the energy bill,” said Myron Ebell, Director of Global Warming & International Environmental Policy at CEI.  “We look forward to working with him and other members of the Senate on policies that will help create an affordable energy future for all Americans.”

CEI and twenty other free market, conservative, consumer, and taxpayer organizations sent an open letter to Chairman Domenici on April 4th, 2003 urging him to not allow destructive new climate policies to be part of the final energy bill.
