Washington, D.C., October 2, 2001—Dr. Bjorn Lomborg, the Danish professor of statistics whose new book, The Skeptical Environmentalist: Measuring the Real State of the World, is outraging environmentalists around the world, will discuss global warming and what’s wrong with the Kyoto Protocol at a congressional and media briefing Thursday, October 4 from Noon to 1:30 p.m. in Room HC-5 of the U.S. Capitol.  Lunch will be provided for those who have registered in advance.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office” />

The Skeptical Environmentalist, published in the U.S. this month by Cambridge University Press, has already been acclaimed by reviewers in England and the U.S.  The Economist called it “a triumph” and writes, “This is one of the most valuable books on public policy—not merely environmental policy—to have been written for the intelligent reader in the last ten years.”  Lomborg challenges the environmentalists’ pessimistic claims about the state of our environment.  His analysis of global warming and the Kyoto Protocol is the longest chapter in the book and he concludes that while global warming is a potential problem, the Kyoto Protocol would do much more harm than good.

The Capitol Hill briefing is sponsored by the Cooler Heads Coalition, a sub-group of the National Consumer Coalition, which is comprised of more than two dozen non-profit public policy groups involved in the debate over global warming and the Kyoto Protocol.  The Competitive Enterprise Institute is a member of the coalition.
